Sint Maarten 2017-18 Home

The Dutch half of Saint Martin definitely lose in the kit front. A standard Admiral template is nice enough and the badge is far more interesting, incorporating the colours of the flag without just copying it. White stands out a little too much on the deep red shirt. A nice colour overall but the accenting should definitely be the deep blue instead.

They swapped around a lot of Admiral shirts so I believe this design was only used for a series of friendlies against neighbouring nations in 2017-18. In general, as with recent games, they didn’t go spectacularly. They’ve lost to Saint Barthélemy though have a dominant record against Anguilla.

Sint Maarten’s record has, in general, been perfectly reasonable. They reached the 1993 Caribbean Cup and secured a point off Puerto Rico whilst they finished 2nd in all but one of the other 5 qualification attempts they made between 1992 and 1997 with 6 wins and 1 draw from 12 games. Sadly, they were unable to play from then, with problems from a poor stadium to lack of players. Their 2017 return brought a new low in results, with an abysmal Nations League qualification campaign only improved by a 4-3 win in the Saint Martin derby. Drawn with Guadeloupe and the Turks and Caicos Islands they then lost every game.

As with the French half of the islands, no women’s side has ever played for Sint Maarten, senior or youth. Even men’s youth football has been patchy, with a disastrous U20 qualification attempt and no U17 side. The U15s did improve to top their most recent group, though all this got them was a 7-0 demolition by the BVIs. Some positive signs from this, though victories over Anguilla and the US Virgin Islands as well as a draw with Bonaire need to be built upon.

There’s not much information about but they are active in futsal at the lower reaches of CONCACAF. A victory over Jamaica in 2016 qualifying shows that the indoor game might bring a little more success for the moment. They have, however, never had a beach soccer team.

Expectations will remain rock bottom for the next season of the Nations League. They can’t try and qualify for the World Cup but the aim will be to not finish bottom of their NL group and to try and return to form. As a constituent country within the Kingdom of the Netherlands, they should be eligible for FIFA but the most recent hurricane interrupted their bid.
